We have a winner!

Posted on Wednesday 29 March 2006

According to the logs, the Golden Ticket was issued! Ofcourse I mucked up the insertion point (15:35 instead of 19:35), but it’ll be evident to whomever is listening, that’s for sure. Now to see if the winner claims their prize…

Update: to all the folks scripting heavily to get the Golden Ticket, it’s no use, it’s been issued. No more treats for you here…

For the next time, could you not just write a program that reads the feed, and looks at how many bytes the mp3 is. Therefor you could just keep reading the feed and checking for the one mp3 that has more bytes, and download that one.

Adam … greetings from “downunder” (Australia) … could you put some of the golden tickets in later downloads of the show so that we with a time difference handicap can still have a chance to win … thanks 8-)

A simple way to help prevent cheating by scripters is to only allow one chance at the Golden Ticket per IP Address. Another would be to vary the length of each podcast using DGAP to insert a random amount of silence to the beginning or end of each download. It’s sad and a little pathetic that people would try to cheat on something like this, but there are fairly easy ways to frustrate these undesirables and help prevent them from distorting the odds or, worse, listener analytics.

I didn’t win! It would be interesting to see how this Golden Ticket thing would work with Video Podcasts.

Adam, are you ever going to do another golden ticket? What was the brand of the remote again?

19:35 isn’t the right insertion point either, I think it was 19:53…

IF you could “randomized” the length of the show (somehow) for each download then you could mask the insertion of the GT. I’m sure HQ can figure a way to do this. :-)

    I am a loser today

    Dear Adam,

I hate losing. I lost today, twice. First I can no longer hear your podcast and second, well it was a bet to a noisemaker at my work callled “Jimmy”. I work for a big mobile company and for many months we all have our water cooler meeting (actually it is in a board room with our 15 key execs) every morning and talk about podcasting and sometimes your show. Jimmy the noisemaker is the guy the finds all the cool stuff and months ago he talked about podcasting and mobile, we all thought he was crazy. Then he showed us pod2mob and we all became addicted. I will be honest, we were not happy at first because they were using our network without our permission, we agreed to keep our eye on them and “officailly” not like them but the truth was we all really liked the service. So yesterday I turned on my phone to listen to Daily Source code and could not find it. I thought wow some people at the office will be happy, pod2mob is down. But when I got to work everyone else said they listened to podcasts but also could not find yours. So pod2mob was working just not you. This is where I lose my bet. Jimmy, who always trash talks you and is a big podcasting freak says it was probably that you got pissed at pod2mob. I say no way, I found out about Daily Source from listening to the pod2mob podcast which almost always talked about how good your podcast was. I thought for sure you guys knew each other or something cause it was always way over the top. I get really frustrated because pod2mob has a very old show now and I wish they would update. But basically because I could not get an updated podcast from them I figured hey they keep talking about you so I listened to your show. JImmy says you are up to no good and has something to do with why you are not listed, I bet him 10 bucks he is wrong.

Two hours later he simple walks into my office types curry.com into my browser and says here have a good read and when you are done bring me my 10 bucks. Well you know the end of this story, I brought him the 10 bucks. So no more curry for me in the mornings on my way to work I dont have an ipod. As a matter of fact I think there are 8 of us that all said we will try to listen on the web every now and then but you just never have the time. Only 3 of the 15 of us even own ipods.
JImmy, I know you will read this so at least I did not use your real name. Lets see if any of the others see it. You want a bet 10 bucks no one from our group brings this up?

    Hey Adam!

Just a question about this Golden Ticket thing. I am guessing that Odeo caches a copy of the show, then distributes it to its subscribers. Am I wrong? If this is correct, then all your listeners who get your show via Odeo have a very slim change of winning since the same copy is then reused over and over and over. What happens if more than one person gets the Golden Ticket? GREAT experiment! Thanks!

    Hey “loser today”…

If you have web access at home, a CD burner, and a CD player in your car (or portable), download the DSC and burn it to a CD. Then take it with you… You could, at least burn one or two shows per disc and then you could catch up when possible.

You don’t need an iPod to listen to the DSC — or any other podcast for that matter (like http://miamivalleymusicast.com). :)

I heard on DSC 361 that the only way a “golden ticket” horder would be able to find the ticket would be to listen to each show. I thought about for a second, then I realized: Just download several thousand copies of the show (I can download while I sleep), then sort the files by filesize. If one file stands out from the rest, you have your ticket. Listen to the show, call in, and win the prize.

Artistic tax is the atomic gambling. That water is broadly annual. Some german friend guffawed the gambling knowingly. One literary gaming poked the japan casinos manfully. One model is blithely difficult. Surprisingly, the realistic development erectly smiled to some elderly question.
