Check out Video I shot in Times Square Yesterday with Fans Watching the World Cup US vs Guana, (they were going crazy ripping their shirts off, screaming) on the ESPN Jumbo Tron. Hundreds of people, even a man in a chicken suit!

So how’d we get from “association rules” to soccer? The Google Answers site attributes the following explanation to David Pickering’s “Soccer Companion” (Cassell, 1994). In short, students at Oxford in the 1880s were fond of abbreviating words while adding “er” to the end. You’d say “brekkers” for “breakfast”, for example. Soccer, then, is an abbreviated form of “association” plus the “er” those Oxford fellows were fond of using. Etymology’s not my thing, but this sounds reasonable to me.

About your data price woes – I don’t usually leave the US, but I have a Treo 650 with Cingular and for $40/month I get unlimited data transfer. That includes e-mail and full web browsing and is in addition to my plan min. Not sure if that would work for you but it sure seems you are getting screwed otherwise.

    Safe travels! :)

No one, or very few give a shit about hockey since the work stoppage that killed a full season. They burned their own brideges with the fans and the season goes on way too long. Watching hockey on tv is almost as dumb as Second Life.

Adam, I think Dave’s comment about the origin of the word “soccer” was right-on (he does the chillout/downtempo/trip-hop podcast called Dave’s Lounge, btw: http://www.daveslounge.com). Charles Hodgson from Podictionary covered it a bit more thoroughly on his recent show: http://podictionary.libsyn.com/index.php?post_id=98083

lol! CSB is not a “mobile phone expert”. He likes to think he is but the real experts know the truth. He didn’t “leave” Nokia either. He was fired for incompetance and from what I’ve heard he hasn’t been able to get another job since. Hence why he has some much time to “stalk” people like you.

I agree with you on the data charges though. Although it sounds like you get a good deal for roaming. In the UK itself you get charged up to £3.50 per meg for going outside your bundle and roaming is even more still! Unfortunately these extorsionate charges will continue until data useage becomes more widspread. T-Mobile’s “unlimited” £7.50 bundle is evidence that things are getting better but for hardcore users, 1GB (or 2GB for pro option) is really not enough. Especially when using the device as say a 3G modem for laptops etc.

Adam Curry: you have problems with international data roaming. That’s correct: there is no international roaming with flat rate fee – the only solution is to use 2 SiM cards with flat rate – for 2 countries you visit and since there is no flat rate in UK (UK is a 3rd world country when it comes to mobile phone industry) so there is no solution yet. People who travel across countries use various SIM cards to evade this problem (I have SIM cards from 4 countries).

Regarding nokia n91: it’s a decent phone but it has no stereo audio over Bluetooth meaning: no possibility to use stereo Bluetooth headset. I personally use in-ear stereo headset and I am very happy with it – I can’t live without it. I couldn’t use phone that has no stereo audio over bluetooth.

ipfreely : you are one of those little jealous piglets who judge me based on their ignorance and spit out lies because they are evil anonymous cowardish pigs. You will go to hell and achieve no salvation – for evildoing. Firstly I was fired for blogging (about Microsoft phones also and not limiting myself to nokia phones only) and not for incompetence certainly and I have it on paper too – to prove it if needed. Regarding me not being mobile phone expert: well, unlike many other “experts” working in mobile phone industry (and I know personally many of them and many of them I met in person) I actually go to trade shows and conferences as accredited press/journalist (while other “journalists” just publish stories from Internet and don’t go to any conferences – and thus are jealous of me) and I interview people from mobile phone industry (including CEOs and top managers), and have other contacts with them (that are behind the scenes and can’t be revealed). The bottom line is that website about mobile phones for which I write has 40,000 unique visitors a day what accounts to almost million a month – this is final proof that I am also de facto mobile phone expert.

So that’s it – the problem is – as Adam Curry knows it – that people are simply jealous and some of them have also websites competitive to the ones for which I write, so they try to invent lies to damage me. Well, no way: the number of readers of msmobiles.com grows all the time… and Windows Mobile’s market share in the mobile phone industry grows too.

Adam Curry: don’t be naive and don’t advertise nokia n91 phone just because they gave it to you!!! Ask them to pay you for advertisements BIG MONEY and don’t let them manipulate you lke some little blogger. Adam Curry you are businessman with Podshow Inc that must go black and/or be sold to big corp, so don’t let nokia manipulate you!!! If they want advertisements of phones – ask them to pay serious money and don’t just sending one stupid mobile phone! That’s simply pathetic if you will fall for it. This phone costs stupid 500 euro. Are you that cheap and stupid Adam Curry that nokia can buy you for 500 euro? Come on!!! Ask them for serious money of advertising or sod off!!!

Adam Curry: don’t let nokia manipulate you for peanuts money!!!

  15.
    June 23, 2006 | 10:50 pm

Adam Curry: it doesn’t matter whether you have anything to say about mobile phones or not – it would be just interview about your personal experiences with mobile phones in your life and general considerations about how podcasting can be used in context of mobile phone industry.

So could you give me this interview Adam Curry!? Come on!

besides, you stupid pig of name “ipfreely”: I am not a stalker of Adam Curry but his friend and supporter – he wouldn’t link to his stalker from curry.com but he links to my blog. Besides I never stalked him – never came near his house, etc. “ipfreely”: you are full of shit.

CSB, you know absolutely sod all about the technicalities of Windows Mobile and that has been prooved on many occasions. Just because you happen to have a popular site means nothing. No-one is jealous of you, you have nothing for them to be jealous of. You’re a pathetic, sad little man who is jealous of eveyone else and so feels the need to attack them for little or no reason.

Were you bullied at school Jacek? Did your mother used to tell you they did it because they were jealous? Guess again, they did it because you were and are a complete wanker.

ipfreely : you are mentally retarded muppet who knows nothing but writes shit – you are full ofshit – and NO, I will not reveal information just because mental retard attacks me. Little example: the multi-billion corporation HTC invited myself to pivotal event to London but nobody else from so called community of brownnosers have been invited. I am going to tradeshows/conferences and most other online journalists/bloggers are not. So you see you retarded muppet that there are many reasons to be jealous and many are jealous and practice is by spreading libel and lies.

go away ipfreely – you are just a retard who doesn’t understand anything.

    Hi Adam,

I really dig the music you put in the show! Open my eyes to the cool stuff that’s out there. Cheers! I’m glad you got the N91 working too! Top darts! Don’t worry about what people are thinking, loads of respected people get units for review and wotnot (as I’m sure you already know) and I don’t think that anybody considers you to have been bribed.

    Keep it up (Oh matron!)

Comic Strip Blogger: How is what Adam did any different to what I read here -> http://blogs.msmobiles.com/mobilephonefan/?p=1782

In that post, you said; “what should I do if a phone is good? Denigrate it just because I got it for free?”

    So, what should Adam do?

I like you CSB, I really do, but you have to be picked up when you call people’s integrity into question.

CSB and ipfreeley- chill, dudes. DSC is a piece of entertainment that is somewhat informative. Lighten up.

If you’d like a high level of discourse, commenting is not the way to do it. Use your blog as a pulpit, and speak to folks in a polite and constructive manner. Calling people retarded and discussing the completely speculative reasons as to why they’ve changed jobs is disgusting an unneccesary.

No one can hear what you have to say because of the way you say it. If your opinion is valid, it will stand on it’s own strengths, and not on the bodies of others that you lay to waste along the way.

I love the DSC, and come by here to see what people think. I’m too disgusted to return. Your conduct and interplay disturbs me too much to re-visit. I work with middle schoolers. This back in forth is worthy of 4th graders, not adults.

In regards to your SpotLIght needs (I think it’s spotlight, the app that runs applications by simply typing in the first few letters of the name of the app) check out AppRocket This seems to work the way you want it to, I’ve never used a Mac on a regular basis so I’m not sure, but I love it so far. ALT+Space and then start typing. Check it out, would love a shout out on the next DSC.

Hmm $1.50 per mb while roaming, may sound steep but when you consider UK customers as STANDARD within the UK get charged at usually £3 per mb!! it starts to look a little more reasonable.
The few data tariffs that are available are just horrible, t-mobile have the only decent one i think, but their coverage isn’t as good i’ve heard but i don’t know personally on that one. Hence why i’m so very pleased i got my N80 phone, picks up my e-mail when i’m in the presence of a wifi point, also the podcasts as Adam mentioned, it is a pretty cool interface, does exactly what you want.

Is someone keeping a book on which match will finish with the fewest players on the pitch?

The most yellow cards now stands at 16. I think FIFA should work on that referee. Either those players were a bunch of animals, or he had just lost it.

    Adam
Congratulations on your new home on the Island.
With the castle gone (so, was that an accident Adam?..heh)
…a couple of us felt the need to say a little good bye.

here are some pictures of our first day without the Castle.
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/sally_petty/sets/72157594177599899/

So, why do we love the Curry Castle?

I have met people who were never able to enjoy
Second Life because it was so vast and overwhelming.
With the Castle you provided a simple place where
everyone who listens to you could go and hang out.
As a result, I have had a lot of fun meeting alot of great people.
    Thanks Adam!
    See you at the Island!

Next weekend, Sally petty, please visit my CSB Labs, that I moved to Podshow Island!

I second the opinion that this removal of Curry Castle was a little bit harsh – Adam Curry should say something about it on DSC and offer some replacement (maybe some new OPEN place for meetingS at Podshow Island? )! Yes, several people were sad that Curry Castle dissappeared and this passed weekend (yesterday) I had to listen to it. SL may be virtual reality, but it is very vivid reality…
